Fan Zhendong’s Big Adventure: From China to the German Bundesliga

The table tennis world is buzzing with excitement! Olympic and world champion Fan Zhendong has made the bold decision to leave China for a season and compete in Europe.

On May 31, 2025, the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) confirmed that 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT had secured what many are calling a sensational signing. Fan Zhendong, just 28 years old, will now play a full season in the Bundesliga, the German Cup, and the Champions League.

At Saarbrücken’s season launch event on August 27, 2025, Fan expressed his enthusiasm for this new challenge. He said he was eager to learn in a different environment and help his team compete for trophies. Saarbrücken’s team manager, Nicolas Barrois, described the move as a historic milestone for the club and for European table tennis, saying that one of the most successful players of the last decade was now part of their roster.

A Rocky Start in Germany

On August 31, 2025, Fan made his highly anticipated debut in the Bundesliga. His team, Saarbrücken, faced TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt in front of an excited crowd.

Fan’s first match was against French left-hander Romain Ruiz, who attacked boldly and even used an unconventional “strawberry” backhand return. Despite leading 2–1 in sets, Fan could not hold on, losing 2–3 (11–13, 11–4, 11–9, 5–11, 6–11).

Later in the tie, Fan faced Germany’s Benedikt Duda, who secured a 3–1 victory (9–11, 11–4, 5–11, 3–11). That left Fan with a debut record of 0–2. Overall, Saarbrücken went down 1–3, with their only point coming from Darko Jorgic, who defeated Adrien Rassenfosse in straight sets.

Opponents praised the tactics used against Fan. Duda commented that Ruiz’s “harakiri” style makes it difficult to settle into a rhythm. Meanwhile, Jorgic defended his teammate, stressing that adapting to German playing conditions takes time. He assured fans that “the old Fan Zhendong will come back.”

What Lies Ahead

Despite the opening defeat, Saarbrücken remain among the favourites for silverware. Manager Barrois noted that ticket demand has skyrocketed since Fan’s arrival, underlining the excitement around the club.

Even rival players see the positive impact of Fan’s move. Ruwen Filus of Fulda said that having Fan in the league makes the fight for the title tougher, while also benefiting the sport in Germany as a whole.

Looking ahead, Saarbrücken will travel to TSV Bad Königshofen on September 6, before hosting Borussia Dortmund on September 14. These matches will offer Fan further opportunities to settle into his new surroundings.

Conclusion

Fan Zhendong’s Bundesliga journey has only just begun. Although his debut brought two surprising defeats, his presence already marks a turning point for Saarbrücken and for the league itself. The season ahead promises drama, excitement, and a closer look at one of the greatest players in table tennis history as he adapts to the European stage.

Fan Zhendong Sparks Ticket Frenzy in Germany – Saarbrücken Adds Temporary Stands! 🏓🔥

Olympic champion Fan Zhendong has already created a massive wave of excitement in Germany following his move to TTC Saarbrücken.

The club announced that tickets for its first two home matches of the new TTBL season – against TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt and Borussia Dortmund – sold out almost instantly. To meet the overwhelming demand, Saarbrücken decided to install temporary stands for the first three home games. Additionally, an onsite ticket office will be set up to give local fans a fair chance to buy tickets.

The 28-year-old Fan, who joined Saarbrücken in June, will make his German league debut on August 31. German media highlight that his arrival has completely transformed the atmosphere. Last season, the club attracted around 400 to 600 spectators per home game. But with Fan on board, the 2,000-seat arena is already selling out a month in advance. The club has even hinted at the possibility of moving certain matches to a larger venue to accommodate the growing crowds.

“The club is being overwhelmed because of the new signing of Fan. We are already receiving countless ticket inquiries, including many from Asia,” Nicolas Barrois, Saarbrücken’s head of organization, told ZDF earlier this summer.

Fan Zhendong secured both men’s singles and team gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the 11th player in history to achieve a career Grand Slam – Olympic Games, World Championships, and World Cup.
