Don’t forget this name — Chen Junsong. The next chapter of Chinese table tennis may already have begun.

Chen Junsong

Have you ever noticed something fascinating about China’s new generation of table tennis stars? 🌟 Their names carry the same powerful rhythm — Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, Lin Shidong, Chen Junsong — all ending with that bold “-ong” sound. In Chinese, these endings symbolize strength and legacy: Long means dragon, Dong means east or pillar, and Song means pine tree, representing endurance and longevity. Together, they form a poetic chain — the dragon who led, the east that rose, the pillar that supports, and the pine that endures. 🏓🇨🇳

Moregard’s Magic: How Truls Took Down World No.1 Lin Shidong in Malmö

https://youtu.be/6bzEYuClMJQ

Europe Smash – Sweden 2025 delivered some of the most breathtaking table tennis action of the year. For 11 unforgettable days in Malmö, fans witnessed shocking upsets, thrilling rallies, and the rise of new stars. But no story shone brighter than that of Truls Moregard, the local hero who conquered the world's best.

In a dream finale at Renaissance ⚜ Arena, Moregard stunned World No.1 Lin Shidong to win his first-ever WTT Grand Smash title, right in front of an ecstatic home crowd. It was more than just a win—it was a career-defining moment that marked the Swede’s first victory over the Chinese ace.

Against All Odds

Statistically, this wasn’t supposed to happen. Lin Shidong had an 83% win rate in WTT events and dominated attacking players with an 80% success rate. Moregard, by contrast, had only a 12% win record against Chinese players going into the final. But this was no ordinary day.

Truls executed a perfect tactical plan and never let the pressure shake his focus. From the very first point, he came out swinging, identifying every slight opportunity to go on the attack—especially on loose half-long pushes.

“You’re either aggressive with what you quickly identify or he controls the opportunity.”
— Truls Moregard

Controlling the Rhythm

Moregard’s genius was not just in power—it was in timing and rhythm. At 9–7 in Game 1, after a fierce rally, he threw in a delicate backspin return off Lin’s short serve, taking control. Then at 10–8, after Lin’s slow spinny flick, Truls countered with a flat backhand punch to steal the first game.

Throughout the match, he varied the tempo with sudden blocks, heavy topspins, and deceptive soft shots—all designed to disrupt Lin’s pace.

“A player like Lin doesn’t really have weaknesses… So variation was one of my focuses.”
— Truls Moregard

Whether it was a fast backhand punch or a slow forehand loop, Truls kept Lin guessing and forced errors at crucial stages.

The Forehand Weapon

One of Truls’ deadliest tools was his inside-out forehand topspin, executed from the backhand side. It often caught Lin off guard and either ended the point outright or gave Moregard the upper hand.

His serve setup was critical. At 9–7 in the sixth game, Truls delivered a wide sidespin-topspin serve to Lin’s backhand, which naturally forced a cross-court flick. Truls anticipated it, stepped around, and hammered a forehand to close the point.

“The game is more or less 50% serve and 50% receive… If you do either badly, you lose.”
— Truls Moregard

The Final Point

The final rally had everything: speed, control, chaos, and pure adrenaline. Moregard served long and fast to Lin’s backhand and stayed aggressive throughout the point, even as Lin fell deeper behind the table. It was relentless offense—and it paid off.

“At one point I thought maybe I’d play one short. But I told myself: stay aggressive on everything. So I just kept going.”
— Truls Moregard

A Fairytale Ending

The Swedish crowd erupted as their champion raised the trophy. This wasn’t just a personal milestone—it was a moment of national pride. Truls Moregard proved that even against the world’s best, belief, tactics, and bravery can win the day.

Next stop? China Smash 2025—and the world will be watching.

Friendship Cup Celebrates 75 Years of Denmark–China Diplomacy Through Table Tennis

Table tennis once again proved its incredible power to bring people together, as the national teams of Denmark and China recently faced each other in Copenhagen for a special Friendship Cup. The event marked 75 years of diplomatic relations between Denmark and China, and was made possible through the close cooperation of the Danish Table Tennis Association, the Chinese Embassy in Denmark, and the Denmark–China Friendship Association.

The celebration gathered both sporting and diplomatic leaders, including Hans Natorp (President of the Danish Sport Association), Wang Xuefeng (Chinese Ambassador to Denmark), He Xiao (Secretary-General of the Chinese Table Tennis Association), Henrik Vendelbo (President of the Danish Table Tennis Association), and Petra Sörling (ITTF President).

The players who took part reflected the true inclusivity of table tennis: global stars such as Sun Yingsha, Lin Shidong, Jonathan Groth, and Anders Lind, Paralympic champion Peter Rosenmeier, and even players with Parkinson’s who use table tennis as a powerful tool for health and well-being. This diversity highlighted the essence of the sport — table tennis for all, and for life.

The Friendship Cup became a strong symbol of how sport can strengthen ties between nations. Echoing the spirit of Ping Pong Diplomacy that helped shape international relations more than 50 years ago, this event underlined how table tennis continues to act as a bridge between cultures and communities — with passionate rallies, joy, and warm exchanges both on and off the table.

Truls Moregårdh Honoured as Person of the Year in Skåne ✨

Fresh from his historic victory at Europe Smash Malmö, where he became Europe’s first Grand Smash champion, Truls Moregårdh has now been awarded the prestigious title of “Årets Skåning 2025” (Person of the Year for Skåne). The recognition celebrates his outstanding sporting achievements and his role as an inspiration for youth across southern Sweden.

The award was presented in one of the most emotional moments of his career, taking place immediately after his stunning win over world number one Lin Shidong at a packed Malmö Arena. The atmosphere was still electric when Moregårdh stepped forward to accept this honour.

“It means an incredible amount,” said Moregårdh, highlighting how the entire Skåne region was behind him, not just the fans in the arena.

Organised by Kvällsposten in partnership with the Flag Foundation, the award celebrates individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the region. Moregårdh emerged as the winner from six strong nominees, chosen through public voting, which underlines the huge admiration for him both on and off the table.

During the ceremony, Maria Rydhagen, Editor of Kvällsposten, presented him with a unique diploma created by artist Harriet Ståhlberg, his own Skåne flag, and flowers. As part of the recognition, his portrait will hang at Malmö Airport’s arrivals hall for the year ahead.

Although born in Hovmantorp, Småland, Moregårdh has lived in Skåne since the age of twelve. “I have always felt at home in Skåne. From the second I moved here,” he said, expressing his deep connection to the region that has supported his journey.

Reflecting on his breakthrough at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he won silver, Moregårdh admitted: “I thought it would be big, but it was 100 times bigger than I ever thought.” His passionate and emotional playing style continues to captivate fans worldwide.

The year 2025 has been one of his finest: after taking bronze at the ITTF World Championships in Doha, he claimed the historic Europe Smash title on home soil in Malmö. Now, with the Årets Skåning 2025 award, Moregårdh has established himself not only as a table tennis superstar, but as a role model whose impact reaches far beyond the sport.

History Made at Europe Smash 2025: Sun Yingsha & Truls Möregårdh Crowned Champions 🏆

The 2025 edition of WTT Europe Smash – Sweden came to a sensational close on Sunday night, with two unforgettable singles finals that rewrote table tennis history.

On the women’s side, World No.1 Sun Yingsha added yet another prestigious title to her glittering career, overcoming Wang Manyu in a breathtaking 6-game thriller: 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5.

But the story of the night belonged to Truls Möregårdh, the charismatic Swedish superstar and proud Olympiacos player, who pulled off the impossible. In one of the most dramatic finals ever witnessed, Truls defeated the world’s top seed Lin Shidong 4-3 (11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-13, 11-9) and made history as the first European ever to lift a WTT Grand Smash Men’s Singles title.

The final point of the match seemed like it would never end. A rally of breathtaking athleticism and nerve, where Möregårdh showed just why he is considered a table tennis genius. His coolness under pressure, his trademark flair, and his iron will made this moment truly iconic.

For Olympiacos and Greek table tennis, this victory has a special meaning.

The presence of such elite athletes in our team proves once again the wisdom and vision of the club's leadership. Having a global star like Truls Möregårdh wearing red and white elevates not just our team but the image of Greek table tennis internationally. His performance tonight made all of us proud, and reminded the world that Olympiacos is not just a team — it’s a movement in World table tennis.

On the women’s final, spectators were treated to a tactical and emotional rollercoaster.

Featuring two of the sport’s biggest superstars, Sun Yingsha vs Wang Manyu was always going to be tight. Game after game was decided by just a few points. Sun held her nerve in the key moments, mixing aggressive backhands with clever pace changes. Even when Wang fought back and leveled at 2-2, Sun elevated her game, dominating the fifth and sixth games with fierce precision.

After the match, Sun Yingsha offered her opponent a heartfelt embrace and thanked the fans in Sweden, lifting her fourth WTT Grand Smash singles trophy to a standing ovation.

As for Möregårdh, he walked off the court to a roaring crowd, waving the Swedish flag — and leaving a legacy that will forever be remembered.

One historic night. Two new champions. One unforgettable Europe Smash.

🏓 Europe Smash 2025 Semifinals Recap 🔥 Lin vs Gauzy, Moregard’s Rise, Sun & Wang Dominate

It was heartbreak for World No.32 Simon Gauzy, as the French artist bowed out of Europe Smash – Sweden 2025 after an electrifying battle with World No.1 Lin Shidong in the Men’s Singles semifinals (11-4, 7-11, 9-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7).

Coming into the match with a recent defeat to Lin at Singapore Smash 2025, Gauzy had every reason to fight for redemption. And fight he did, stepping into the Renaissance ⚜ Arena with a fire in his eyes and magic in his hands.

A Stunning Turnaround

Lin came out strong, taking the first game 11-4 with explosive precision. But Gauzy, fueled by motivation and his unique flair, turned the tide and stunned the Chinese top seed by winning the next three games in a row. Leading 3-1, the Frenchman seemed just moments away from reaching the final.

Then came the fifth game – a narrow win for Lin. In the sixth, Gauzy had a 9-6 lead and was on the verge of clinching the upset of the tournament.

But Lin, showcasing championship nerve, rattled off five consecutive points to force a decider. He didn’t stop there—finishing the job with a dominant 11-7 final game to crush Gauzy’s dream run.

Moregard’s Dream Final Awaits

Awaiting Lin Shidong in the final is Sweden’s own Truls Möregårdh, who delighted his home crowd with a ruthless 4-0 victory over Benedikt Duda (11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6).

“I was really nervous, but once I stepped on court, it all turned into adrenaline,” said a beaming Moregard. “Tactically and technically I played fantastic today. Now I will try to make the story even more perfect tomorrow.”

With his aggressive play and vocal intensity, Moregard ignited the Malmö Arena crowd and heads into the final full of confidence and belief.

Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu: Title Track Activated

In the Women’s Singles bracket, Sun Yingsha avenged her previous loss to Chen Yi at the US Smash by dispatching her rival in four dominant games (11-2, 11-3, 3-11, 11-7, 11-9). The World No.1 is now one step away from another Grand Smash crown.

Wang Manyu, not to be outdone, responded with a jaw-dropping 4-0 destruction of Shi Xunyao (11-7, 12-10, 11-3, 11-7), setting up an all-Chinese showdown in the final.

“Hold my drink,” Wang seemed to say with her performance—blazing through her match with a vengeance.

Doubles Delight: Wong & Chan Shock the World

Earlier in the day, Wong Chun Ting and Chan Baldwin pulled off the surprise of the week, defeating the No.3 seeds Lin Shidong and Huang Youzheng in a five-game thriller (7-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8) to win the Men’s Doubles title.

“We trusted each other. We prepared well. And we played brave,” said Wong Chun Ting after the match.

The pair from Hong Kong, China, claimed their first-ever WTT Grand Smash title in just their second appearance at this elite level—writing their names into the Malmö history books.
